Instructing us
Reuben Law Barristers accepts private instructions under The Standard Contractual Terms for the Supply of Legal Services by Barristers to Authorised Persons 2020. Those standard terms can be found by clicking the button below.
Our barristers offer a range of fee structures, including hourly rates, fixed fees, and Legal Aid (where applicable). Kindly note that advance payment of fixed fees is mandatory for all instructions accepted by barristers under the Public Access scheme. VAT will be levied in addition to the professional fees of the barrister, where applicable.
Payment structures can take various forms, such as:
- Fixed fee for the entire case;
- Separate payments for each hearing in the case;
- Hourly rate basis (including preparation, travel, waiting, conference, and advocacy); and
- Brief fee to accept the case with additional payments for each day in court (refreshers).
Occasionally, additional costs such as travel, waiting, and hotel expenses may arise. These costs are identified and included in the initial discussion with the client at the outset of the case.
We ensure transparency and clarity about fees, offering a clear and understandable financial arrangement. If additional work is required beyond the scope of the initial agreement, you will be informed of any potential additional costs prior to the commencement of the work.
Conferences can be held at our offices or an alternative location that is conveniently accessible to our clients.
PUBLIC ACCESS
Engaging with a barrister instead of a firm of solicitors can lead to cost savings, potentially expedite the legal process, and provide immediate access to high-quality legal advice. Most areas of law are now covered by Public Access. In certain instances, the barrister may advise you to engage a solicitor, particularly if the case presents the need for more assistance than the barrister alone can provide.PUBLIC ACCESS
Anyone may instruct a barrister under the Public Access scheme. However, it is important to acknowledge that the ‘cab rank’ rule does not apply to Public Access work. Consequently, a barrister is not legally obligated to accept the instructions and take your case.
